GIPPSLAND MASSACRES
The Destruction of the Kurnai Tribes 1800-1860 by P.D. Gardner, ISBN 1875254110, Published by Ngarak Press 1993, (Third Edition 2002) Gippsland massacres is one of those books that lifts the lid on this countries history. All across Australia the events that happened in Gippsland were repeated over and over again. P.D. Gardner has through meticulous investigation been able to find the true story about this part of the world. He explores the fate of Gippsland's indigenous people in this 120 page booklet. What happened is not pretty reading, it's a story that needs to be told and P.D. Gardner is the man who has been able to tell this story. He examines what happened across the length and breadth of Gippsland and exposes a history that every Australian should be familiar with. P.D. Gardners efforts are an invaluable contribution towards the reconciliation process between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians. Through painstaking research he has been able to lift the lid on events that the descendants of Gippsland's colonisers have conveniently forgotten. Within 20 years of the colonisation process the Kurnai, Gippsland's original inhabitants plummeted from numbers that exceeded from 3000 to less than 300. This fall in numbers occurred as a result of a number of hidden massacres. P.D. Gardners book is an invaluable contribution to that hidden and forgotten history that continues to be denied by the government of the day.
