THE MODERN CRISIS
by Murray Bookchin 2nd Edition ( 1st Edition Published 1987 ) Black Rose Books Montreal ISBN O-920057-62-4 Bookchin is one of the few modern anarchist thinkers who has been able to expand the anarchist envelope. Whether you agree or disagree with his conclusion that politics needs to be reconstructed along democratic municipal lines there is always a lot to glean from Bookchins forays into print. The modern Crisis is no exception in this newly released revised edition of The Modern Crisis, Bookchin clinically and methodically deconstructs the myths that surround modern society. The book consists of an introduction Rethinking Ethics, Nature and Society and four distinct articles what is Social Ecology? Market Economy or Moral Economy? An Appeal for Social and Ecological Sanity and workers and The Peace Movement. Bookchins book is in his own words " is imbued with a deep sense of ethical commitment". In many ways reading Bookchins thoughtıs in The Modern Crisis reminded me of the time I spent in a Catholic school as a little boy. I distinctly remember been plied with a liberal dose of moral imperatives that were dished up in soup that was heavy on faith and light on practical realities. The Modern Crisis is worth a few hours of your time because it can help to focus your thoughts on the problems that face the post modern world. Some of the articles are plain hard work because Bookchins knack of hiding the obvious among a series of convoluted arguments. Although The Modern Crisis is not one of Bookchins best works and the articles seem to have been collected in one volume for the sake of publishing a book, Bookchin has something to say about a Modern crisis that will stimulate both thought and action among anarchists and non anarchists.
